Our Patients say it Best

August 13, 2008

The following letter was emailed to us from a recent patient of Dr. Heiferman’s treated at the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago. While the patient’s first impression was with Doctors Cerullo and Heiferman, the lasting impression was that of an exceptional and compassionate care team, including physicians, nurses and all supporting staff. I am honored to work with such fine professionals and I thank you for your unwavering dedication and service to our patients.

Name: Robert and Marie

City/State: Joliet, IL

Correspondence: Dear Doctors Cerullo, Heiferman and all the “GREAT” Staff at CINN.

My wife Marie had two previous back surgeries, the first in 1992 that fused and screwed L4 & L5 together which was a long recovery with a fitted body brace for three months. In 1997, the L2 &L3 degenerated and she went through another back surgery. The original screws were removed and replaced to connect the L2,L3,L4,L5. This surgery was extremely painful and a very slow recovery again wearing the form fitted brace. In January of 2008 she began having severe back pain and numbness down her legs. We visited with Dr. Cerullo who recommended an intervention injection to identify and possibly relieve the area of pain prior to any thoughts of surgery. Because of the scar tissue from the previous surgeries this method couldn’t help and he guided us to Dr. Heiferman for a surgical opinion. Dr. Heiferman was great in his concerns, compassion and recommendation of surgery to repair the degenerated L5 to S1 joint.

We were very concerned of surgery because of our age and the previous two surgeries that were painful after the surgery. Our children also were extremely concerned about another surgery. I was also very concerned of my wife of 47 years enduring another back surgery. Being worried we visited with Dr. Heiferman again to confirm surgery and I asked him about the surgery to remove the hardware from L2, L3, L4, L5 and put in new hardware to connect all those plus the S1 joint. I’ll never forget his comment to me was “It’s a piece of cake”.

She went into surgery on May 14, 2008. After surgery Dr. Heiferman visited the whole family in the waiting area and assured us everything went fine. In the recovery room she was alert and sore but nothing like the previous surgeries. The nursing care was second to none. Each and every person attending her were extremely compassionate, caring and willing to serve her immediate needs. The Doctors on staff and visiting Physicians were great in reviewing her condition. Immediately after surgery her leg pain was gone. It is now three months and she can walk pain free and sleep in a bed again. Our last visit with Dr. Heifferman removed her requirement for the back brace which was not form fitted but much more pliable and comfortable to wear.

Our only regret is we didn’t come to CINN for the previous surgeries. We can see why CINN is rated #1 Hospial in the Chicago.

Dr. Cerullo, Dr. Heiferman and everyone at CINN, please accept our sincere thanks for the care, compassion, friendliness, professionalism and work performed at the hospital. “Never lose this special gift”.

Sincerely yours,

Bob and Marie
