Chicago, August 1, 2008 – What does it take to go the extra mile? How does one beat a personal record? More importantly, what does a runner do to keep from getting injured? These are the questions on the minds of competitors who are gearing up to run in the 31st annual Chicago Marathon, Oct. 12, 2008. After preparing for months, athletes need to be careful not to overextend their bodies before, during, or after the race.

To that end, the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago (NOHC), Harmony Health, Inc. and Fleet Feet Sports Chicago are offering a free clinic to help runners understand alternative ways to treat their injuries and improve their running ability at the same time. Dave Zimmer, owner of Fleet Feet Sports Chicago, will discuss proper footwear and problems marathon runners might encounter; Dan Hurley, M.D., physiatrist and non-surgical musculoskeletal specialist at NOHC, will review common aches and pains and answer participants’ questions. Harmony Health practitioners Kellylee Whiteside, L.Ac. and Denise Jenderzak, L.Ac. will discuss how acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can counter the effects of hard training on the body and mind. Practitioners also will demonstrate acupressure techniques to use at home.

“Using Acupuncture and Sports Medicine to Improve Your Race” will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2008 from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago, 4501 N. Winchester, Chicago, Illinois. Space is limited, so registration is recommended for this free event. Please call 773-250-1009 or e-mail info@neuro-ortho.org.

According to surveys measuring injuries after marathons, the most common ailments occurring in marathon runners during training, the race, or afterwards are corns, calluses, blisters, muscle cramps, acute knee and ankle injuries, plantar fasciitis, and metatarsalgia. Running injuries tend to be nagging, and if not taken seriously, can compound later in life. Eastern medicinal practices can be extremely beneficial to an athlete’s body and mind.

Specializing in Chinese medicine, Harmony Health wants to help the American runner. Harmony Health’s practices include acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy, Chinese nutritional therapy, massage and yoga. The Center’s mission is to alleviate localized symptoms and to treat the underlying root cause of an ailment ensuring complete recovery and reducing chance of recurrence. They have recently moved into their new home within the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago.

The Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago is the country’s first freestanding acute care hospital dedicated exclusively to neuroscience and orthopedic services. It utilizes breakthrough technology and minimally invasive techniques as well as advanced procedures for neurosurgery, orthopedics, pain management, neuro-oncology, sports medicine, and rehabilitation.
