Neurosurgeons at the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch are the first in the Chicago area to use a new device that is designed to make neurosurgery safer and prevent additional spine operations.
Today, thousands of patients suffer from pain in their lower back, frequently radiating into the buttocks and legs due to herniated discs, or rupture in the tissue that surrounds the disc. This causes the soft inner part of the disc to push out and compress the nerve root, causing intense and debilitating pain. Read more

Back patients will laugh out loud (LOL) during laughter clinic in Vernon Hills

Vernon Hills, IL, March 19, 2007—Managing back pain for Colleen Caron is a laugh a minute. The chronic back pain patient and laughter therapist says laughter is an analgesic and she is spreading the word to other sufferers. On Saturday, April 14, 10:30 - noon, Caron will share her love for laughter with other back pain patients during a therapy/yoga sesson at the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch clinic located at 565 Lakeview Parkway in Vernon Hills.

March 12, 2007—Chicago orthopedic surgeon Mitchell Sheinkop, MD, of the Neurologic and Orthopedic Institute of Chicago, aims to do for the knee what he has helped do for the hip-namely, provide a knee implant procedure that meets the needs of younger, more active patients who suffer pain associated with arthritis. Sheinkop was among the first group of surgeons to adopt hip resurfacing for younger patients who experienced significant hip pain, and could benefit from the bone sparing and minimally invasive procedure that hip resurfacing provides.
Now, Sheinkop and his colleague John Cherf, M.D. are the first two orthopedic surgeon in Chicago to be selected for training by orthopedic device maker Smith and Nephew to offer a new procedure for the knee; the anterior cruciate preserving knee resurfacing called The Journey Deuce. Read more
