Hip & Knee Replacement on the Rise at NOHC

February 4, 2008 – 11:43 am

At the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago, we see a continued growth in our market share as younger patients seek new hips and knees. 18 months ago, neurosurgery was dominant at the only specialty hospital in the Midwest. In early 2007, NOHC was designated as one of the premier hospitals in Illinois performing neurosurgery, based upon clinical outcomes. By year end, hip and knee replacement procedures at NOHC accounted for 50% of the orthopedic surgical volume.

For over three decades, artificial hips and knees for seniors have helped make the lives of those over 65 more active and satisfying. Over the past 18 months, we redefined the NOHC mission to become a hip and knee replacement Center of Excellence by helping members of the younger set overcome their hip and knee problems.

We recognize that while the average age of an artificial joint patient used to be 66, our fastest growing segment of the population is between ages 45 to 55. Technology today allows the prosthesis to last longer. Yet at NOHC, your incision and hospital stay is shorter. In 2007, we began serving the younger end of the patient curve suffering from hip disease with a new offering, the hip resurfacing prosthesis. When performing a total hip replacement, the ball-shaped top of the thigh bone is removed and replaced with an artificial stem and ball. With hip resurfacing, the femoral head is retained leading to an almost unlimited functional capacity. By retaining more bone there is more motion and more stability.

In February of 2008, we will introduce to the patients at NOHC, the Hi Flex Mobile Bearing Knee for the first time in the United Sates in part because of my clinical investigative research. This will offer those of the younger age population the high performance capabilities for the knee that resurfacing offers those undergoing hip surgery.

The Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital Blog was created to provide insightful brain, back, and joint information to people that struggle to find the right path in the maze of healthcare-related decisions they face today. The power of the internet is transforming health information and empowering people to take a front seat in managing their own health; correspondingly it has inspired Doctors Leonard Cerullo and Mitchell Sheinkop to share NOHC's cutting-edge resources with the online community.

Our interactive team will be posting periodic updates to the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago Blog.

We hope that you will take a few seconds to subscribe to our future postings and look forward to providing you with valuable healthcare information for a successful treatment outcome and a speedy recovery.
